AI Training for Marketing Teams: Learn on Your Own Live Work
By Adam Sandler, founder of The Viable Edge · Updated
AI training for a marketing team works when the team practices on its own live work: a real brief, report or campaign it has that week. Generic training fails because it teaches tools over judgment: the features of a tool, not when to trust the output or what to check. In my private team workshops, the team leaves able to run at least one AI-assisted workflow without help, and review stays with people.
How do you train a marketing team on AI?
Train the team on its real work, inside the workflow it will run. In my workshops the team practices on its own live work: a real brief, report or campaign it has that week.
A half-day focuses on learning through a useful task; a full-day gives the team room to build a repeatable workflow and agree how to put it into practice.
This is the Train step of The Viable Edge’s AI-Native Marketing Team Framework. The team learns through the workflow itself: running it, checking sources, reviewing output, and handling the situations that need a person’s judgment.
The day after training, the team can do four things:
- Run at least one AI-assisted workflow without help.
- Give the AI the right sources and context instead of starting cold.
- Know what to check before anything AI-made goes out.
- Spot which decisions stay with people.
Why does generic AI training not stick?
Generic training fails for one reason: it teaches tools over judgment. It covers what the features do, not when to trust the output or what to check before it goes out.
Judgment is the part a marketing team keeps. Strategy, positioning and priorities are decided by people; AI drafts and assembles.
That is why I am not a generic prompt-engineering trainer. Training happens on the team’s real work, because AI adoption means redesigned workflows and grounded systems, not handing everyone a chat tool.
The three kinds of training differ in what the team practices on and what is still running a week later.
| Generic course | Certificate program | Workflow-based team training | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you practice on | Sample prompts and exercises | The program’s own coursework | Your team’s own live work: a real brief, report or campaign |
| What’s left at the end | Familiarity with tool features | A certificate | At least one workflow the team runs without help, its sources, and the checks before anything goes out |
| Follow-through | Up to each person | Up to each person | A trained owner for each workflow, and a review of what is used and what changed |
| The right call when | One person wants a broad introduction | Someone needs a credential | A team wants to change how its own work gets done |

How can AI help marketing teams?
AI helps a marketing team at the points where work gets stuck: reports that need assembling again before anyone can use the findings, brand and business context spread across documents, tools and people, and drafts that take too much correction because the source material or review process is unclear.
Training is how the team gets a practical way to put AI to work on an actual task.

Which AI course is best for marketing?
The best AI course for a marketing team is the one that trains on the team’s own work and leaves something running afterwards. Ask four questions of any option.
- Will we practice on our own live work, or on sample exercises?
- What will the team be able to do the next day without help?
- Does it teach what to check before AI-made work goes out, or only what the tool can do?
- Who owns each workflow afterwards?
